About This File


This is a Rogue-like game, where you hack your way through a dense forest in search of a way out.  Also, there's a rumor that the fabled Amulet of Yendor is lost somewhere in this forest.  What a feather in your cap it would be to return with that!

The map is revealed as you explore.  Aside from the Amulet, there are three other kinds of treasures -- weapons, armor, and food.  Weapons and armor vary greatly in their effectiveness: pay attention to their descriptions and you'll learn which ones are better.

There are 31 monsters in the forest.  They are currently differentiated by name only.

  • Movement is via the cursor keys.  Trees are impassable, and usually immovable.
  • Escape the forest at the eastern or western borders.
  • "Bump" a treasure to inspect it.  There are no traps, so all treasure is safe to check out.
  • "Bump" a monster to attack it.
  • If your hit points reach zero, you're dead.
  • Press the spacebar or the period (".") to rest and regain one hit point.
  • Type "e" to eat some food, if you have any.  Hunger greatly reduces your combat ability!

I like the fog of war a lot, very impressively done

However I'm finding the game impossibly difficult.  Even after picking up an axe, and being able to hit a minotaur with it for about 40 each hit, i didn't survive the battle. Usually because I am surrounded by other monsters too eventually. Unclear if this is because I'm bad at the game or that there may be a problem with the monster's HP or not, I don't know, but I've tried 5 times with the same result.

Finally it seems the monsters are able to attack me diagonally, while my hero can only fight horizontally or vertically.  This makes it unfair when surrounded by enemies you cannot hit!

All in all lots of potential but not really playable for me as it is right now.   Will be glad to retry an updated version to adjust my rating hopefully!

Thanks DF!  Yes, the monster-diagonal attack was commented on awhile back, and I've since removed that "feature".

I also find the game quite difficult, and depends highly on chance putting you in a clearing free of monsters initially.  I think it's probably a good idea to enforce this a bit in the initialization code... shouldn't hurt the difficulty overall.

I want the game to not frustrate *too much*, especially the first time playing.  But I still want it to challenge.  Game balance needs work.

Lots of fun and great use of PETSCII for the trees! Nice work.
