Keyboard Layout Survey

That said, keyboard layouts don't have to be in ROM, can can be (auto-)loaded from SD card as well. I could decide against shipping more than 12 in ROM, and ship a few extra ones as files for the SD card instead.

Thanks for the explanation Michael. I do like the idea of shipping in ROM, as it's one less item to go find. Having good notes on how to use a profile on an SD card perhaps would help those who want to use a different layout than what is built in. I'm guessing many are happy that this feature is in the X16.

Colemak? 🤣

Oh, that is nice too.  I'm not a fan of QWERTY.  Of course I doubt I'll ever use Colemak 😞

Maybe someone could write an APL interpreter and/or compiler, and thus of course an APL keyboard would be a necessity—not to mention that the APL character set would also have to be supported...

I had a class in college that touched on APL (one of four languages we spent two weeks each covering). That is some terse hard to read code (though I'm sure if I had cause to use it as often as C / C++ I'd be used to it and find it second nature).

First one to make this code play Conway's Game of Life on an X16 gets a gold star:

life  {1  . 3 4 = +/ + ¯1 0 1 ∘. ¯1 0 1 ¨ }

Solid gold star or just gold colored? I need more details!

There is a APL for the old Super PET, however it was written for the 6809 processor and not the 6502. I'd love to dabble with it on the X16, but that's perhaps a big ask. Related is that there are several languages for the X16 that aren't basic or assembly, which give the X16 some appeal beyond what one could do with a VIC-20. APL hasn't made it there yet....

GOODY! Can I artificially slow down the S/370 to level the playing field?

Build an S/370 emulator for the X16, and you have nowhere to go but up.

...sorry for distracting from the keyboard discussion. As long as US QWERTY is the default, it won't make a bit of difference to me. 😁

As a lifetime standard ANSI US 104 layout user, it pains me to say that the majority of laptops and Chromebooks sold in Canada come with a 00011009 Canadian Multilingual Standard keyboard. My kids use that layout. Bleh! 🙂 Anyway, for what it's worth, it's a popular layout here.

Except if it is J, and then 00000409 would be fine.

Thanks for all your input. Together with data I have from 2019, I have compiled the following list, in the order that F9 will cycle through them:

00020409 United States-International
00000809 United Kingdom
0000041D Swedish
00000407 German
00000406 Danish
00000410 Italian
00000415 Polish (Programmers)
00000414 Norwegian
0000040E Hungarian
0000040A Spanish
0000040B Finnish
00000416 Portuguese (Brazil ABNT)
00000405 Czech
00000411 Japanese
0000040C French
00000807 Swiss German
00010409 United States-Dvorak
00000425 Estonian
0000080C Belgian French
00001009 Canadian French
0000040F Icelandic
00000816 Portuguese
0000080A Latin American

  • The ROM bank is still only 2/3 full. Who can think of other useful layouts?
  • Any comments on the order?
  • The Japanese layout doesn't seem to be too useful, since the ISO-8859-15 encoding can't map any of the Kana characters, so it's very close to a US keyboard, no?
