The 8-Bit Guy 45 Posted January 31 I spent some time the last few days converting Petscii Robots over to the X16. It's now more or less fully functional. Well, you can play the game from beginning to end, anyway.. But it still lacks sound, and it is using the default font, which I hope to change soon to the PET font, which will make it look nicer. It also lacks a lot of effects like screen-shake, EMP flash, etc. I'll be working to add those in over the next few days. Also, since the game is designed for 40x25 screen, there is some black area at the bottom. That being said, once I get this version completed, I'll slowly begin the transition to a custom graphic version for the X16 as originally promised, which should fill the whole screen. 28

Johan Kårlin 87 Posted February 1 I am happy to see an X16 version after all. It’s encouraging for all of us who are trying to develop programs for this platform as well.
OguzhanKuyubasi 11 Posted February 3 Comes the PET Mode also in the X16 Version?

BruceMcF 237 Posted February 5 (edited) @Perifractic While it's nice to hear that the board & the program are enjoying each other's company, there's such a thing as TMI. Edit: Ooh! That's what you meant to say. Well that's all right then. Edited February 5 by BruceMcF see below

OguzhanKuyubasi 11 Posted February 6 Will be there an Option to select the PSG, FM or both?

A little question. Will you use 16 Colors or 256 Colors for Attack of the PETSCII Robots? For me it looks like 16 Colors. Strider 81 Posted February 8 I'm not sure why, but this is just so awesome to me! Seeing a new "retro" game playing on a new "modern retro" computer, on the actual hardware prototype.... Fantastic! This brings back that old sense of joy I used to get back in the 80's/90's when a new game or hardware was just on the horizon. Thank you!

Actually, it looks like @The 8-Bit Guy is using black as a consistent background color for all the characters, so this could very easily be done in 256 color mode. 1

I thought the YM3012 was just used to convert the digital audio bitstreams from the YM2151 into analog audio outputs. Like, the CPU wouldn't be able to address it. Using the PCM (by itself) for music would be a bad idea. It requires way too much memory to hold uncompressed audio samples, and the 65C02 is not powerful enough to decode MP3 or anything in real time. The PSG or the YM2151 are FAR more efficient options for music. What you can use the PCM for are non-pitched instrument samples, like drum hits, which only take up a few kilobytes, and you can synch those up with a PSG or YM2151 track.

Combining the YM2151 and the PCM from the VERA you got good music like the Arcades and the Sharp X68000.
