of course it was a slim chance for x16 ever to use it.

Yes, replacing a fairly widely used "new-old stock" chip with an obscure new chip kind of needs the new chip to be readily available. If the obscure new production part is hard to get and will be going out of production soon, it's not really solving the problem of availability of the sound chip.
