Rules change: Clone/homebrew systems

Post by TomXP411 »

A note that we've changed the "clones" policy at: viewtopic.php?p=25284#p25284

Simply put: we have rescinded the "no clones" rule, so you can talk about your homebrew clone X16 systems, along with any other place your hobby takes you.

The policy has been changed to reflect the reality that a few people are making homebrew clones, and one person has licensed his clone for distribution as a kit machine.

If you want to license a copy of the ROM for your homebrew computer, we encourage you to contact a member of Commander Computers LLC. At the moment, David Murry aka The 8-Bit Guy is the preferred contact. You can reach him on the Discord or via PM here on the forum. (Discord link is on our home page at https://www.commanderx16.com )

The other issue is emulation: Emulation is legal and does not need permission. However, the distribution of the KERNAL and BASIC ROMs that requires a license. So you may not re-post Commander's ROMs on the Internet. If someone needs the ROMs, they must acquire them as part of a Commander X16 computer or the official emulator.

Since we are not lawyers, please do not ask anyone here about specific cases or otherwise try to "rules lawyer" specific scenarios. Our policy only governs discussion that happens through our sites and is not legal policy for the use of Cloanto or Commander Computers intellectual property.
