Are there any good simple RISC-V computers?

This is where we discuss our modern PCs, Raspberry Pis, Macs, and smart-whatevers.

Are there any good simple RISC-V computers?

Post by encw »

Is there a modern computer project with a RISC-V chip, and a simple graphics, and audio systems rather like the X16 (though, obviously, much more powerful).

I'm thinking that the best computer for recreating Commodore's magic isn't a computer that seeks to emulate the experience of 80s or early 90s computing (though that is cool too), but rather to be what Commodore would have created if it were making a computer today.

Is there such a system?

If Commodore still made computers, they'd probably go the same route that Apple did when they moved from their Apple ][ and /// models to the Macintosh line, ergo, from the C=xxx to the Amiga.

I can picture a world where Amiga became the machine to have for video production, headlined by the Video Toaster and eventually supplanted with RGB and digital video interfaces.

So far, RISC-V seems to mostly be at the experimenter level. You can buy Raspberry Pi style computers with RISC-V processors, but there's little market so far for the CPU outside of people who want to try it just because it's new.

Your best bet is probably to try one of the mini SBCs, like the Pine64 or Milk-V board. Those are not much simpler than a smartphone or desktop PC, however... that's just the nature of modern computing.

At ExplainingComputers.com, there's a section devoted to RISC V as it relates to SBCs, as well as general information. Here's a direct link: https://explainingcomputers.com/riscv.html

The site host also has a YouTube channel where he's posted several videos about RISC V. Here's a link to his playlists. Click the one labeled "RISC V SBCs": https://www.youtube.com/@ExplainingComputers/playlists
